I noted with regret that you, an elected member of our state and a republican, publicly announced your non-support for a fellow republican candidate should they win the nomination. I am not a supporter of Mr. Trump. It is too early in the process for me personally. I find him brash and compulsive at the moment. Even if he had four arms and breathed fire the public shunning of a fellow republican is not a wise course of action. You, and other prominent republicans have made some bad choices of late. It is one thing to say that you won't vote for someone and support someone else, it is quite another to say that you will not support the party's nominee for office. After the results of our state primary your actions seem to say to those who elected you, "Your choice doesn't agree with mine and is therefore flawed". It begs the question, did the citizens of this great state make other mistakes in their past elections? Your actions speak volumes to me on the health of our party and our election process. It is highly likely that all citizens hear in your remarks: "We, the elected, will now dictate to you, the electors, who you will vote for." I am disappointed in your actions. If you have joined together with those of another party (and those who hold very different views than most republicans) to remove a republican candidate from the possibility of election, that is an act that will only result in dissolving respect for the party and ultimately you personally. This is a stain on your character you will find hard to remove. It is an affront to those who you put you in office to publicly denounce the peoples' choice, no matter how much you may disagree with it. That action publicly places your will higher than theirs and pales the light of the constitution and our election process. You, above all, should see the danger in this. If not, it is a sad day for the state of South Carolina and the appraisal of your judgment. You are a bright young republican with a tremendous possibility for future offices in government. I would back away from your peers' poor choices at this early date. You are better than they. No reply is requested. Respectfully, Jerry Merritt Summerville SC
