COLUMBIA - Sex offenders in South Carolina would be eligible for the death
penalty under a new law that took effect Saturday.
Those convicted of criminal sexual conduct in the first degree will have to
wear an electronic monitoring device.
A mandatory 25-year minimum sentence will be imposed for some offenders and
anyone convicted twice of raping a child younger than 11 would be eligible for
the death penalty.
It was just one of several new laws that went into effect when the state
started its new fiscal year July 1.
State employees will get 10 more cents a mile for work-related travel and
public school report cards will have to show students' cumulative grade-point
average for grades 9-12.
Other new laws dictate that each county must have a prosecutor dedicated to
criminal domestic violence cases and determine how new taxes on bingo ticket
sales are divided among state accounts.
