MILLER NAMED CCA OF THE YEAR AT AG EXPO
COLUMBIA---Gilbert Miller, Bamberg County Clemson Extension Service, today was named the state’s “Certified Crop Advisor of the Year” (CCA) for 2001 by the South Carolina Fertilizer and Agrichemicals Association (SCFAA) at the Ag Expo in Columbia. The award was presented by outgoing SCFAA president Jimmy Hudson.
Miller received his BS degree from Mississippi State and his Master’s degree from Clemson University in Horticulture. He has been employed by the Clemson University Extension Service since 1980. During his tenure with the Extension Service, Miller has concentrated on melon and vegetable crop production and specialized in fertigation. He also has devoted much of his time to working with young people through 4-H-programs. Watermelon and cantaloupe growers in the Bamberg area seek his advice frequently.
Russell Duncan, Clarendon County Clemson Extension agent, said, "Gilbert is an excellent choice for the award and sets a good example of what the Certified Crop Advisor program is all about.”
Nominations for the prestigious award are submitted from fellow CCA’S throughout the state, growers, Clemson Extension representatives, and members of SCFAA. From those nominations, the SCFAA executive committee selects the recipient.
The purpose of the award is to increase awareness that both farmers and those serving farmers strive to do their best in making economically and environmentally sound crop production decisions. A CCA must meet the standards set by the American Society of Agronomy, maintain certification through continuing education, sign and follow the CCA code of ethics pledging to be credible, and serve the best interest of their clients. In the year 2001 there were 101 Certified Crop Advisors certified in South Carolina.
