Ernesto Makes Landfall

(WLTX, AP) - The National Hurricane Center says
Tropical Storm Ernesto has made landfall near Long Beach, North Carolina.

Highest winds were 70 miles an hour.

Tropical Storm Ernesto brought heavy rains and gusty winds to South Carolina's coast, but not much damage.

The National Weather Service says Myrtle Beach reported a peak wind gust of 46 miles per hour last night, while North Myrtle Beach had nearly seven inches of rain.

Horry County officials say there were some minor power outages and a few trees down. They plan to assess any damage in the county Friday.

Most of eastern North Carolina and parts of Virginia are under threat for flooding and tornadoes over the next day.

Lexington School District One canceled Thursday night's varsity and junior varsity football games for Gilbert and Pelion High Schools. The Gilbert-Pelion varsity game will take place Monday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m at Tomahawk Stadium in Gilbert. The junior varsity game will take place Thursday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in Gilbert. And Pleasant Hill Middle School's open house moves from Thursday night to September 5. All Pelion High School athletic practices scheduled for the afternoon, Thursday, Aug. 31, have been canceled.

Two Richland One high-school football games have also been canceled. Both games will be held Saturday, Sept. 2: Mid-Carolina at A.C. Flora, 4 p.m. at Memorial Stadium; and Swansea at C.A. Johnson, 5 p.m. at Bolden Stadium.
