I've enjoyed state parks across the state, and many of our best family memories are from SC state parks. On this trip, we returned to Charles Towne Landing. There we met a wonderful park ranger (C.J.) who was the highlight of our entire trip (my daughter said he was better than chocolate mousse, which is high praise indeed!) He impressed us with not only his knowledge of the time period he was presenting, but particularly the enthusiasm he brought to it. No one who listened to him for more than a few minutes could have failed to be both interested and educated. It's education I wanted to talk to you about. Because we asked him about the education he'd had, and he explained that he had not graduated from college - he was taking a class or two whenever he could afford it. And that's a tragedy. People with the drive and motivation to better themselves through education should be supported. They are an asset to their community and to the country. I work in the technology industry, and my employer will reimburse me for tuition and related school expenses for classes or a degree in my field. I think that South Carolina should offer the same benefit to its state employees - at least covering state schools and community colleges. I'm looking forward to my next visit to Charles Towne and would be really excited to not only see C.J. again, but also to learn that he's getting to pursue a history degree with support from the state. Thank you for your time, and feel free to contact me using the information above should you require more details. Martin Presler-Marshall
