S.C. lays a legend to rest

Television Editor

What can happen during one's lifetime? If you were Strom Thurmond, quite a lot. Today, South Carolina will celebrate the life of this legendary figure with a funeral at Columbia's First Baptist Church and then burial in Thurmond's hometown of Edgefield. Television will be there to cover it all.

The 100-year-old Thurmond, the longest-serving U.S. senator in history, died at 9:45 p.m. last Thursday in Edgefield. Born several months before the Wright brothers' historic flight at Kitty Hawk, Thurmond was witness to a parade of incredible changes, technologically and socially. Think of it: He saw the birth of movies, radio, television and computers. He was around to celebrate both Lindbergh's flight to Paris and Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon. He saw a segregated order change through the years, highlighted by Jackie Robinson's entry into baseball, Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech and the Voting Rights Act. A onetime segregationist, Thurmond himself evolved as the 1970s dawned. Why did he change? Does it really matter as long as he realized it was something he should do? Noon, WIS-10, cable ch. 3; WLTX-19, cable ch. 9; WOLO-25, cable ch. 5; ETV digital ch. 801
