DNR hosts Sept. 14 Cheraw youth fishing rodeo, paddle clinic
The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the South Carolina Parks of Recreation and Tourism (SCPRT) have partnered together to host a free outdoor family event on Sept. 14 in the Cheraw area. Youth ages 6-15 are encouraged to sign up for a fishing rodeo at the DNR Cheraw Fish Hatchery and a paddling clinic at SCPRT’s Cheraw State Park.
Youth will have the rare opportunity to fish at the Cheraw Fish Hatchery on Sept. 14 during one of two scheduled sessions from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Youth ages 6-15 must be accompanied by and adult and no adult fishing will be allowed. Pre-registration is required and limited spaces are available. You can also call (803) 737-8483 to register. Sign in occurs 30 minutes prior to the session start time. Bring your own fishing equipment and tackle. No minnows allowed. Anglers can catch and keep, but an event specific creel limit will be in place.
The Cheraw Fish Hatchery was constructed in 1937 with federal funds and assigned to the state for operation and maintenance. The Cheraw Fish Hatchery is located five miles southwest of Cheraw adjacent to U.S. Highway 1.
Cheraw State Park staff is conducting a free paddle clinic at the park on Sept. 14 for two sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 12 noon to 1 p.m. Canoes and kayaks along with life jackets and paddles will be provided. The sessions are limited to the first 10 participants so sign up today by calling (843) 537-9656. Admission to Cheraw State Park is free.
At Cheraw State Park, cypress wetlands line Lake Juniper and can be explored by kayaks and canoes or via a boardwalk that runs along the lake. Try fishing from the boardwalk or by boat, or take time to explore other areas of Cheraw on the park’s extensive biking, hiking and equestrian trail system.
