SC Chefs invited to participate in Colonial Cup’s Ultimate Tailgate

CAMDEN---Organizers of the Colonial Cup Steeplechase Races are "cooking up" a new feature for race day with The Ultimate Tailgate competition for South Carolina Restaurant Chefs. The Association will be hosting eight of the finest chefs from around the state on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at the historic Springdale Race Course.

Tailgate event sponsors are Tec Infrared Gas Grills and Ben Arnold Sunbelt Beverage Company. The coordinator is Chef John Militello of Alternative Dining. The tailgate competition was established to bring two prominent industries of our state together---the hospitality and the equine industries---both representing a large portion of South Carolina’s commerce.

Other sponsors include the South Carolina Pork Board, South Carolina Beef Board, South Carolina Poultry Federation, and the South Carolina Department of Agriculture. Chefs will be provided a selection of South Carolina specialty foods from which to choose as cooking ingredients. The competition will reward each chef up to 10 points for using a South Carolina homegrown product. The chefs will also be judged on tailgate presentation, quality of taste, and votes from the crowd.

The Colonial Cup Race isn’t just about horses and chefs. The fabulous Paddock Shops will be up and running for your holiday shopping needs. Other pre-race events include Jack Russell terrier trials, mule and horse rides and demonstrations in the infield. It is a day in the country for families and an afternoon of America’s finest thoroughbred horse racing.

The judging will take place at 11am and the culinary-tented area will be open to the Colonial Cup fans for a tasting of great food and fine wines at 12 noon. There is a nominal fee to enter which includes a beautiful etched glass for sampling.
