Ice Begins To Melt Away, Overnight Freezing Possible
Roads Still Icy Across Much Of Upstate
GREENVILLE -- A slower-than-expected move north by icy precipitation helped road crews try to make a dent in the miles of slick roads across the Upstate. But overnight freezing rain made many roads difficult if not impossible to drive on Tuesday.Roads got an additional glaze of ice during the night, making marginally passable roads impassible. A small amount of frozen precipitation fell on some parts of the Upstate Tuesday morning.Areas south and east of Interstate 85 spent the day in a fog that kept the sun from melting the ice. But many areas west of Greenville saw the sun shine under blue skies late in the afternoon, melting much of the ice.
Officials warn that subfreezing temperatures across the area overnight will refreeze any roads that are still wet.The South Carolina Department of Transportation has opened a toll-free call center for road conditions. The number is (888) 877-9151 and the number will be open until 6 p.m. Tuesday. Officials said that as of Monday evening, 1,349 workers in 528 pieces of equipment have spread 5,237 tons of salt, 25,735 gallons of calcium chloride, 12,000 gallons of salt brine and 6,691 tons of sand statewide.Many flights at Greenville-Spartanburg airport are back on schedule, with only three arrivals canceled as of 9 a.m. Several more departures have been canceled or delayed.The Greenwood Red Cross chapter has opened a shelter for those who need it. More than 7,000 Greenwood County residents lost power yesterday, Duke Power officials said. The shelter is at the Church of God of Ninety Six at 301 Saluda Street.Greenville Public Works said there will be no trash or recycling pickup Tuesday.
