WASHINGTON -- Senate Judiciary Committee member Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., supported President Bush's nomination Monday of Texas-born lawyer and White House Counsel Harriet Miers to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.

Although Miers has no judicial experience, Graham said she has been in the "legal trenches" throughout her career as a lawyer, making her a "solid choice" for the role.

Graham's support came less than a week after he recommended Orangeburg resident and 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Karen Williams for the Supreme Court nomination.

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said in a statement that Miers would "bring a wealth of personal experience to the Supreme Court." He said he hopes that the Democratic senators would be more in accord with the Republican vote this time. Half of the Democrats voted against Chief Justice John Roberts Thursday when the Senate confirmed his nomination.
