(Columbia-AP) July 19, 2005 - A group of state
senators pledged Tuesday to find a remedy for increasing
property taxes across South Carolina.
Members from the Senate Finance and Judiciary
committees have formed a "super-subcommittee" to study
the hot-button issue that has divided the General
Assembly for years. The committee plans to seek the
public's help by holding hearings around the state.
Charleston Senator Glenn McConnell says the time has
come to take action. He says property tax is the
cruelest tax of all because it has the potential to put
people out of their homes.
The 12 senators plan to draft legislation by November
and get the bill to the Senate floor as early as
possible when the Legislature reconvenes in January.
McConnell and Senate Finance Chairman Hugh Leatherman
are optimistic a solution could be found, but say it's a
daunting task to tackle in less than six months.
