I am pursuing a degree in music with choral education emphasis, and wish to be a high school choral director after college. This year a few of my courses have covered recent events happening in other colleges around the nation regarding diversity in educational staff and in the student body, and allowing students a "safe space" to speak their minds without repercussion. It was so large an issue that the School of Music now has a staff member delegated to be the school's "diversity officer". I liked the idea at first of having a member of the faculty that could help encourage all kinds of events that would celebrate diversity in my school, but as of now its just another title. This got me thinking, and I realized that outside of each public school in my district having an "international day", there's not much else done to celebrate diversity in the classrooms. I personally think that now is one of the best times to teach our children about other cultures and try to dissuade cultural hate that is getting tenser in the wake of the election. How do you think we could incorporate other cultures in our classrooms, and what are your feelings on the matter? And do you think schools should try to have a more diverse staff over having maybe the most "experienced" staff? Personally I feel that every student in a school should have someone that they can look up to as a mentor and a role model. Sincerely, Patrick Rosenfeld P.S. Go Cocks
