Senior wins essay contest Thumbs Up to Jordan Beckman, a rising senior at Easley High School, who was named winner of the 2004 journalism contest sponsored by the S.C. Governor's Committee on Employment of People With Disabilities. Beckman's essay — about a first-grade teacher stricken with a tumor in her brain stem — was chosen from among 63 entries in the contest. Beckman, who receives the opportunity to attend the state college of her choice on a four-year scholarship, intends to study psychology at USC Honors College.

College funds women's commission Thumbs Up to Columbia College, which has offered to raise $250,000 a year and take over the duties of the Commission on Women after Gov. Mark Sanford eliminated state funding for the commission. The private college will provide staff and offer a permanent home for the commission. It also will train women to take leadership positions and continue studies on women's health and other issues. The commission's work is important to a state with the highest rate of domestic violence homicides in the nation and the lowest rate of women elected to public office.

Judge takes national post Thumbs Up to Judge Charles B. Simmons for being named to the National Association of Drug Court Professionals' board of directors. Simmons has presided over Greenville County's successful drug court program since 1998. This appointment is an honor for Simmons and a testament to his experience, expertise and passion for giving addicts a viable path to recovery. It will all be useful to an organization whose mission is to improve drug courts and increase their presence across the nation.
