Owen gets eight yearsPosted Wednesday, March 30, 2005 - 1:18 pmBy David Dykes STAFF WRITER ddykes@greenvillenews.com
Owen, 61, pleaded guilty in July to 22 counts of securities fraud related to the sale of notes and debentures by Carolina Investors, a subsidiary of HomeGold Financial Inc. He had been awaiting sentencing. Owen was the first person to face criminal charges in what is one of the biggest bankruptcies in South Carolina history. About 12,000 people -- most from the Upstate -- lost an estimated $278 million when Pickens-based Carolina Investors closed in March 2003. |
