Gov. Mark Sanford named a former Charleston TV
newsman as his communications director Tuesday and brought back his former
campaign press secretary to head his press office.
Chris Drummond, formerly of the CBS and NBC affiliates in Charleston,
will run Sanford's communications, while Will Folks, who left his post
with Sanford after the campaign, returns as press secretary.
In another hire formally announced Tuesday, Joel Sawyer, who covered
the governor's race for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, will serve as
speechwriter.
The three will be paid less than their counterparts in the Hodges
administration.
Drummond, 42, who was raised in Charleston, previously served as news
director at both WCSC-TV (CBS Channel 5) and WCBD-TV (NBC Channel 2) in
Charleston. He was a volunteer on the Sanford for Governor campaign
against Jim Hodges and worked for the governor-elect during his
transition.
Drummond will be paid $70,000 a year, which is less than the $96,000
his Hodges administration predecessor earned, according to figures from
the governor's office.
Folks, 28, a Columbia native, previously served as Sanford's campaign
press secretary, lead copywriter and spokesman from October 2001 to
December 2002. He left the transition team to start a political consulting
firm, which has been put on hiatus while he assumes the role of press
secretary.
Folks will be paid $42,500 a year, which is less than the $65,000
earned by his predecessor.
Prior to joining the Sanford campaign, Folks played bass guitar for a
Columbia-based alternative rock band. He earned degrees in history and
philosophy (1997) and a master's degree in mass communication (1999) from
the University of South Carolina.
Sawyer, 26, a native of Lyman, received awards for in-depth and spot
news reporting from the South Carolina Press Association in 2001. He
earned a bachelor's degree in political science (2000) from the University
of South Carolina. His salary will be $37,500.
