THE DAILY BUZZ

The GOP-dominated House chambers will be quiet today. Representatives voted to give themselves the day off so they could go to or watch President Bush’s inauguration.

Speaker David Wilkins, R-Greenville, who planned to attend the festivities in Washington, said the House won’t fall behind.

“If anything, we’re ahead of schedule,” Wilkins said, pointing out that the state will save $11,780, since members won’t get paid for the day.

At least one Democrat thinks the House should stay in session.

“We should be here doing the people’s business,” said Rep. Leon Howard, D-Richland.

But House Democratic leader Harry Ott, D-Calhoun, said he won’t raise a fuss.

“We hope in four years when we inaugurate a Democratic president, they’ll extend us the same courtesy.”
