SRS ranks good on environment

AIKEN - The Savannah River Site was environmentally compliant on all fronts in 2005, according to a report released Tuesday.

Officials at the nuclear reservation monitor possible radiation levels in groundwater, soil, vegetation, wildlife and even its effects on humans who live outside the gated facility, the SRS Environmental Report for 2005 states.

Samples were collected by site officials and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and no infractions were reported, according to the report.

It also states that the compliance rate of the site's National Pollutant Discharge Elimination system increased from 99.7 in 2003 to 99.9 last year.

"What the report says is pretty much what it has consistently said for years now: There is little if any impact from the operations of missions at the site, and that's a good thing," said Will Callicott, a spokesman for Washington Savannah River Co., the private contractor that runs SRS for the Department of Energy.

In fact, it has been 20 months since the site received a notice of violation from an environmental regulator.

"The Savannah River Site environment is as clean today as it has ever been," said WSRC President Bob Pedde. "It's a good story, and it continues to show that we can carry out our missions with little impact to the environment."
