Primary appeals made to veterans in South Carolina

ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL

Blacks and women are expected to make up a large portion of the turnout in Tuesday's Democratic primary, but a major question remains: Will veterans, who traditionally lean Republican in South Carolina, vote for a Democrat?

South Carolina is home to more than 412,000 military veterans. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry both have made appeals for veterans' support in TV ads.

A Clark ad features a black female soldier in her Army uniform advocating Clark's qualities as a leader and his fairness as a person.

Kerry's ad features footage of him in front of the USS Yorktown at Patriot's Point where he announced his campaign in September. In the ad, he's seen talking to fellow Vietnam vets while World War II veteran U.S. Sen. Fritz Hollings closes by saying Kerry is the best situated to defeat George Bush for the presidency.

While much has been made about military credentials, three-fourths of respondents to a recent CBS News poll of South Carolina voters indicated it didn't matter if a candidate served in the military.

CNN DUE ON CAMPUS

CNN will broadcast live Monday from the College of Charleston as an advance point for Tuesday's vote. College officials made the offer for CNN to come more than a month ago, and the TV network finally OK'd it on Friday.

Political producer Eileen McMenamin said the school surfaced on CNN's radar screen during the 2000 Republican primary when John McCain held an event there. Bush also visited the school.

"It's a beautiful campus, and we love to have students get involved in our shows," McMenamin said.

The network will be on campus from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., broadcasting on George Street between Coming and St. Philip streets.

CNN commentators Bob Franken, Judy Woodruff, Paul Begala and Robert Novak will provide discussions throughout the day while CNN's lineup of political analysis shows are aired.

APPRECIATION BASH

The Charleston County Democratic Party will hold an election night bash to thank the 500 volunteers helping conduct the "First in the South" presidential primary. The event will be held at The City Bar, 192 East Bay St., beginning at 7:30 p.m.
