SC DOT has denied the signs due to a 8 mile/200,000 visitor requirement. The Ninety Six National Park holds extreme historical prominence that has not been well advertised by the State. The new Welcome Center in Oconee County on I-85 will advertise both the Cowpens and Ninety Six sites, however there is not an exit sign for Ninety Six. I-85 Exit 11 has wayfinding signs via the SC Heritage Corridor Discovery Route,on which the Park is listed. We are advertising a site, we should have an exit marker to acknowledge direction and tourism. The SC DOT contenstion is the site is 31 miles from the exit. However with gps devices, car navigation, cellphone technology along with established way finding signs the likelyhood of loosing a tourist is unrealistic. However, we are losing revenue as it passes by heading into Georgia. I have been fighting for the signs for over a year and have sought the assistance of Senator Nicholson and Senator Massey. Please help me by supporting my efforts. Tourism is an ecomonic driver and stabilizer in our region and I do not feel my request is unrealistic. The National Park signs, qualify for federal funding and not a direct cost to our DOT. Ninety Six is the first land battle South of New England, houses the only remaining Patriot tunnels nationwide and the only remaining earthen Star Fort worldwide. I hope that exit signs could be a possibility. Thank you for your assistance and for taking the time to acknowledge my request.
