The goal of Republicanism, or so we had thought, is removing the heel of government from the necks of individuals. Four putatively Republican Horry County representatives - Tom Keegan, R-Surfside Beach; Billy Witherspoon, R-Conway; Thad Viers, R-Myrtle Beach; and Tracy Edge, R-North Myrtle Beach - voted last week to sustain the weight of government on the necks of tattooists and their adult customers. They voted to kill a bill that would have legalized the activity under strict state health guidelines and zoning guidelines.
The bill comes up for reconsideration Tuesday. The four, in true Republican spirit, should support it and decriminalize an activity that affects only willing sellers and buyers.
