(Columbia-AP) March 7, 2006 - A bill making
it clear that the governor can order flags
lowered when he sees fit passed a Senate
subcommittee Tuesday.
Governor Mark Sanford was criticized for not
ordering flags lowered when civil rights pioneer
Rosa Parks died. But Sanford has said state law
does not give him that authority.
This legislation would give the governor the
authority to order flags lowered when the
president does so for federal buildings or when
a notable person dies.
The bill has already passed the House. It now
moves to the Senate Finance Committee.
