(Columbia-AP) -- The Democrats first-in-the-South presidential primary is today in South Carolina.
Polls opened this morning and will remain open until 7 p.m. as voters chose a candidate to oppose President Bush in November. You can get the latest results right here throughout the night.
Recent polls show North Carolina Senator John Edwards and Massachusetts Senator John Kerry in a tight race. Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean and retired Army General Wesley Clark trailed significantly. The Reverend Al Sharpton and Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman are farther back. Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich is also on the ballot, as are Missouri Representative Dick Gephardt and former Illinois Senator Carol Moseley Braun, who have both dropped out.
Voters heading to the polls today will not have to sign a Democratic "loyalty" oath.
South Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Joe Erwin dropped the oath requirement on Monday.
Erwin says he made the decision because the party was deluged with complaints about the requirement that those voting today sign a statement that read "I consider myself to be a Democrat." The oath was meant to keep Republicans from spoiling the Democrat's primary.
Erwin says he didn't want to create confusion with the statement. Erwin says the pledge has been used by the party since 1976. |
