DNR program helps keep waterways clean
Since the 1990s, South Carolina has participated in the federally funded Clean Vessel Act (CVA) Program, which aims to keep sewage from boats out of our state’s waterways.
“With federal funding from the CVA program, DNR and marina operators work together to offer recreational boaters an inexpensive and convenient option for properly disposing of their sewage," said Scott Meister, CVA coordinator with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Between April and December 2012, Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina and the Charleston City Marina pumped out almost 100,000 gallons of raw sewage from recreational boaters. Pumping of sewage is done through the use of special boats that are outfitted with pumps and stationary shore side facilities. David Rogers, of the Charleston City Marina, said “Through our partnership with the CVA we are able to make pumping out boats inexpensive and easy.” Participating marinas will empty the sewage holding tank of a recreational boat for $5 or less.
Participating South Carolina marinas receive financial assistance for the construction, renovation, operation, and maintenance of pumpout facilities. Through their continued joint efforts, our state saw the expansion of pumpout station coverage during the 2012 season. The state added 5 new pumpout boats, renovated existing boats and stationary pumpout stations, and supported ongoing maintenance and operation of all participating pumpout boats. The renovations and new boat purchases bring our state coverage to over 50 coastal and 30 inland pumpout locations.
