Senators considering a bill to require sprinkler systems in hotels are asking that the bill be rewritten because of the financial impact on historic hotels.
Greer Senator Verne Smith proposed the bill after a January 25th fire in Greenville that killed six people and injured 12 others.
The five-store hotel was not required to have sprinklers because it was built in the 1980s. Smith's bill would have required all hotels to have sprinklers by July 2007.
The bill had been changed to only apply to hotels taller than three stories, because of concerns about the bill's impact on motel and hotel owners. A Senate subcommittee this week asked staff to rewrite that.
Charleston Senator Glenn McConnell says the proposal could put historic hotels in Charleston out of business.
