BG: About 18 months ago the DOT announced plans to remove the trees because there were more than 100 accidents and 47 deaths on that strip of highway during a five (5) year period. The DOT held a meeting at Summerville H.S. and I drove there from Columbia to tell them, according to the DOT report, the main reason for the accidents was distracted driving and drivers falling asleep. It had nothing to do with the trees. When President Eisenhower created the highway system he knew the shortest distance between two points is a straight line so most of our highways are straight as an arrow, hence falling a sleep at the wheel due to boredom. The trees are innocent. More than 6 miles of trees east of Summerville have already been destroyed creating a huge mud pile. I urge you to contact DOT Monday morning and demand a stop to this destruction until you investigate this further. By Tuesday there may be nothing left to save. South Carolina. "Smiling faces, beautiful places. Not if the DOT has their way. Thanks.
