I would like to suggest a way to make the roads better in SC and possibly without a huge tax increase. It has been my experience that many times more money is not needed, the way it is spent might need to be changed. I would suggest a private independent audit of how SCDOT spends its money and how it determines which roads to repair etc. I think SCDOT has been doing business the same way for 50+ years and it is time to make some changes for the better. People who work in the same jobs for a long time tend to not want to change and continue doing the job as everyone else always has. The new employees are trained to do the job the old way. If the audit finds SCDOT is doing a great job, good for them. If the audit finds SCDOT is wasting money it will suggest ways to do better. This audit would not be punishment or be out to get anyone, it would be to help. You have the B&CB select an independent auditor, your appointed Director welcomes the idea to help save tax money and improve SCDOT, and you have taken the first REAL step to fix the problem of our roads and it will cost very little when compared to blindly giving SCDOT billions of dollars As a great governor, I am sure you see the value of finding out how money is being spent before throwing huge sums of money at the problem not knowing if it will even do any good. Best wishes. My wife Jane says hello. Mark
