COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - President Bush won South Carolina's eight electoral votes. With more than three-fourths of the votes counted, Bush is getting 58 percent of the vote to 41 percent for Democrat John Kerry.
Fourth District Congressman Jim DeMint won the U-S Senate seat that Democrat Ernest Hollings is retiring from this year. The Republican DeMint beat Democratic state Education Superintendent Inez Tenenbaum. With 77 percent of the precincts reporting, 54 percent of the vote to Tenenbaum's 44 percent.
All five of South Carolina's U-S House members who were seeking re-election won.
First District Republican Henry Brown beat Green Party candidate James Dunn. With 92 percent of the precincts reporting, Brown is getting 88 percent of the vote.
Second District Republican Joe Wilson beat Democrat Michael Ellisor. With 85 percent of the precincts reporting, Wilson is getting 65 percent of the vote.
Third District Republican Gresham Barrett was unopposed.
Fifth District Democrat John Spratt beat Republican Albert Spencer. With 82 percent of the precincts reporting, Spratt is getting 62 percent of the votes.
Sixth District Democrat Jim Clyburn beat Republican Gary McLeod. With 81 percent of the precincts reporting, Clyburn is getting 66 percent of the vote.
The only open seat was the Fourth District. Former Representative Bob Inglis won the seat he gave up in 1998. The Republican Inglis beat Democrat Brandon Brown. With 58 percent of the precincts reporting, Inglis is getting 69 percent of the vote.
