While I am a registered Independent, I fall to the left of center on most issues. I felt compelled to write to you, primarily to convey my thanks for your courageous speech. While you and I may differ on any number of issues, I am deeply grateful for your ethical and common sense approach to what has become a very ugly, frightening political season. I love our democracy and am grateful for our two party (as well as smaller ones) system. Democracy is the absolute best approach to governing our highly (and beautifully) diverse great nation. Democracy, however is designed to be messy; designed for all voices to be heard, designed for civil disagreement, mutual compromise, respect, especially among our leaders. There is no excuse for the ugliness, racism, insults and intolerance some of our candidates have exhibited. This is not an exclusive for Republicans, however this season, it has been this honorable party that has been subjected to appeals aimed toward the lowest common denominator of human emotions. I applaud your courage as well as unwillingness to apologize for being the voice of reason. I truly hope that the pressure that is being put upon you by party leadership does not beat you up too badly. You have appealed to our better nature, Governor Haley, and I am grateful for your leadership and focused response. May God bless you and your family richly. May He protect you from those who, out of ignorance or malice, would choose to chide or malign you. I admire you very much and pray that this country continues to hear your voice. If both parties can put down their mean spiritedness and partisanship, I have no doubt that our country could benefit immensely from mutual respect and cooperation. With blessings and good cheer...and a great deal of hope :) Pat Greene P.S. I am a first generation immigrant on my Father's side (Ireland) and second generation on my Mother's side (Finland)and believe that the richness of our wonderful country is directly due to the amazing amalgamation of our worldwide treasure of people. I have lived a good life because of this richness (I am a 65 year old retiree) and believe in the better nature of the people who continue to see the USA as the incomparable haven for freedom and hope. While you will undoubtedly be bombarded with emails, I know you will, in all likelihood, not have time to read this email. I did, however, need to write it. Bravo, kudos and thanks.
