COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina legislators
are calling for satellite-based monitoring of sex offenders on
probation in the wake of the kidnapping and death of a Florida
girl.
Sen. Robert Ford, D-Charleston, said satellite monitoring linked
to bracelets could prevent crimes in the future.
The legislation says the monitoring will last as long as a sex
offender is on probation.
Nine-year-old Jessica Marie Lunsford was last seen the night of
Feb. 23. Last week, sheriff's deputies said convicted sex offender
John Evander Couey, 46, confessed to taking the third grader from
her home and killing her. Couey was arrested last week on probation
violation charges in Georgia and brought back to Florida. |
