Online, it states that one can register at the County Board of Registration, or at the local Department of Motor Vehicles. Yesterday afternoon, my son made it to the Ballentine DMV before closing. The lady at check in told him, "You cannot register to vote unless you are conducting a DMV transaction." My son told her, he had conducted a transaction at a prior date, and that he didn't need one at this time. She told him he would "have to go to the County Board." I was there as well, and told her that this didn't sound right, and that it stated online, that he could come to the DMV to register. The DMV probably should have offered it to him, when he was there at the previous time, recognizing he was 18. I know Nikki Haley has made registering to vote as easy as possible, by even transporting people, while maintaining accuracy and legitimacy with the photo ID. Therefore, what the employee lady said, did not sound right. It sounded like added work. We are not much on placing personal information on the internet (we've already had things stolen), so in person worked better for him. He was headed out of town, so he could not turn around and go to the County Board. I questioned her. Her answer to me was, "I have worked here 12 years, and you can't register here without a transaction." Today, half an hour ago, I called the State Election Commission. I thought this matter is important because other people may have the same understanding and difficulty. I told the lady who answered the phone what had happened, and that I wanted to know if a transaction must be made to register. She said she didn't know. I said, "You are the State Election Commission, I would think you would be the one that knew the rules of voter registration." I asked her several times if it were correct that a person cannot register at the DMV if one is not conducting a current DMV transaction. She said, "I don't know; I wasn't there." I said, "You don't have to be there." I was there; my son was there. She wouldn't let him register. Is the rule, of conducting a DMV transaction necessary for one to register, correct?" "I don't know, I wasn't there." How frustrating. It is weird that the State Election Commission doesn't know the rules. I said well if the State Election Commission doesn't know the rules, then who does?" She said, "I am transferring you to the Director of Public Information." I don't know if this person is within the Election Commission or not. I left a message. The whole thing is very weird. We have spent hours since, trying to find out, and printing out an application, and calling to see how to attach an ID (because it does not say 'photo copy'). Anyway, please tell me whether or not a person can register to vote at the DMV without conducting a present, current, right-on-the-minute DMV transaction. The woman I talked with at the Ballentine DMV knew exactly what we were talking about. I personally, reiterated it numerous ways, to make sure there was no misunderstanding. She understood clearly. The woman at the election commission who supposedly doesn't know the rules of voter registration, the same. She understood my question. I am very thorough when I talk. Maybe it is the rule, but if so, it seems it should be mentioned online that a motor vehicle transaction must also be completed to register to vote. So please let me know. Thank you.
