"This is a real important issue for the grand strand economically, safety of the people and as someone mentioned along the coast of South Carolina at some points in the summer we can have 3 million people," says DeMint.
A panelist of five including local leaders, a researcher, and meteorologists presented their views on how the area should handle hurricanes. A key issue - evacuation and the problems it presents.
"The southern part of the Grand Strand, Surfside, Garden City, Waccamaw Neck area doesn't have a very effective evacuation route we need one, that's critical," says public safety director Paul Whitten.
"Maybe all of our efforts should not be built around evacuation it should be about maybe certifying structures we know can withstand a storm," says DeMint.
From the presentations DeMint hopes to develop a plan that's best for the area. Officials encourage everyone to think ahead and create a plan in the calm before the storm.
The information senator DeMint got Wednesday will go on the congressional record and it could lead to legislation to help local governments during an emergency.
