I had visited the site to report a traffic sign problem and saw this 'Did You Know' message. I'm not sure what DOT is expressing here, but it sounds like they are lobbying the public for higher taxes. If so, this constituent wants to reaffirm the message that more taxes are not always the answer. Yes, our roads need to be properly maintained. Let's look at other options besides more taxes on the motoring public, i.e., higher federal contribution, reduce spending in other areas. I thank you for your close attention to this very important matter. s/John Harlow http://dbw.scdot.org/workrequest/Confirmation.aspx?WorkReqNo=827445&County=DILLON&Phone=(843)%20774- 7376 Did you know? The State of South Carolina has the fifth largest state-maintained system of roads in the country, yet receives less revenue per mile of state responsibility than any other state. We receive $34,299 per mile in combined state and federal revenue while the national average is $145,127 per mile. We are forced to spend the least amount for maintenance per mile of any southeastern state. Our maintenance expenditures per mile are $8,164 while the national average is $22,937 per mile. In South Carolina, our highway system is funded primarily by motor fuel user fees, which have not been increased since 1987. Most states have a diverse source of revenue with which to operate, something that is badly needed here in South Carolina. The roads belong to everyone. Please help us protect your investment.
