U.S., British media cover Sanford decision

Staff Writer

Newspaper readers from England to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to Las Vegas are familiar with Gov. Mark Sanford's military status.

Sanford, 42, announced his decision Tuesday to honor his commitment to the Air Force Reserves. By Tuesday night, media Web sites around the country featured the news.

Wednesday morning, Sanford was interviewed by the British Broadcasting Corp. about his Reserves status.

The domestic media outlets reporting the governor's announcement include the Sarasota Herald-Tribune in Florida, Newsday in New York, the Times Picayune of New Orleans, the Las Vegas Sun, the Tuscaloosa News and the News Journal in Longview, Texas.

The Guardian, a tabloid in London, carried an item about Sanford on its Web site on Tuesday.

ABC News also posted the story to its site.

In most cases, the media outlets have picked up the story from The Associated Press.

Sanford had a news conference Wednesday morning to elaborate on his decision.

Beyond the usual collection of State House reporters, Wednesday's event featured television reporters from Columbia, Charleston and Greenville, print reporters from Spartanburg, Greenville, Charleston and Columbia, plus two radio reporters from the capital.
