(Columbia-AP) Jan. 29, 2004 -- High school students would lose their driving privileges if they skip too many classes under a bill a Senate subcommittee approved Thursday.

The legislation calls for suspending student driver's licenses if they have ten unexcused absences from school. Principals and district superintendents would have to approve the suspensions.

Students younger than 18 who have beginner's permits or licenses would be affected. Students with their license suspended could get it back by returning to school or entering a GED program.

The bill now moves to the Senate Transportation Committee.
