Darlington County is the winner of the Healthy South Carolina Challenge. Today the county gets honored at an open house at the governor's mansion. The challenge, sponsored by Governor Mark Sanford and first lady Jenny Sanford, kicked off in May 2004 as the Sanford family's effort to encourage people to place more emphasis on improving their health. Darlington County showed the most improvement in its overall health and wellness as measured by percent change in body mass index, smoking rates and physical activity combined.
