(South Carolina) September 3, 2005 - On
Saturday Governor Mark Sanford called on all South
Carolinians to help hurricane victims. From prayers to
cash donations, Sanford is asking for people to reach
out, and all across the state, people are answering that
call.
South Carolina has done everything from sending
people to help, deliver supplies and rebuild to taking
in evacuees from a city trying to recover.
In Lexington, some little folks are doing their part
to contribute to the cause. Allison Zarzar, her sister
and her cousin set up a lemonade stand in Lexington to
collect money for hurricane relief. In addition to a
cool drink, they offered cookies, muffins and even
Krispy Kremes.
Allison's mom says her daughter really wanted to
help, "From the first moment she saw the devastation on
the Gulf Coast she said what can I do."
As of Saturday afternoon, they had already raised
$200 for the American
Red Cross .
At another location in Lexington diapers, Baby wipes
and non-perishable food items are being collected for
hurricane victims. Just look for the big orange truck in
the parking lot of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church.
The church is teaming up with Harvest Hope Food Bank
and will be collecting items all this week. Not only
will the supplies eventually be shipped to the Gulf
Coast, some will be put to use right away.
"We'll be having many folks coming to our community
with nothing but the clothes on their back and harvest
hope will be providing food for those individuals as
well." Reverend Bill Green says that some of the
supplies collected will stay right here in our community
For more information on how
to donate call the American Red Cross of Central
South Carolina at 803-540-1215.
