Haley: I have been a staunch Republican for over 50 years; am a Marine Corps Vietnam vet; a retired senior corporate executive; a property owner and a taxpayer. Yet, with all my background, I am still perplexed. We clearly have a huge "roads" problem here in SC. Everyone seems to acknowledge it, including yourself. And, by simple, non-political logic, it seems to me the most straightforward way to pay for roads is to tax those who use them -- many of whom are not residents of SC -- but just people and trucks passing through. Since we have one of the lowest taxes on gasoline, why not tax the gasoline that drives the vehicles that use the roads? Or am I over simplifying. Said another way, why should I pay another half cent of taxes on ALL my purchases just to pay for road repairs when I am an inconsequential user? Or is this just a "stand on my principles" show by you and others to demonstrate the "power"of your office(s) -- yielding no results? An explanation would be appreciated.
