They can be recognized as legally married in any yet and yet be legally fired from their jobs, evicted from their apartments, denied credit, refused hotel rooms, and discriminated against in education for practicing this new right. This is allowed in, I believe, 29 states. LGBTQ are being denied basic protection, and yet at the same time it is illegal to discrimination against people because of their class, gender, or race in the same exact way. Since most of this could be limited to private business within the states and as such it is not interstate commerce, I understand that as of now it is left up to the state to change this and add sexual orientation and gender identity to their non discrimination law, which is why I'm contacting you. I don't have detailed information on how the government works, on both state and federal levels, as I am a senior in high school. But I am about to graduate and I am already working a job, and its concerning to know my future as a teacher in South Carolina may not exist if the schools decide they don't want me teaching their children because of who I'm married to. This kind of behavior would be harmful for businesses, as it shows they look at the person before they look at their skill level. I know this could potentially be something strongly opposed in a state like South Carolina, but I want to think most people in our state would know what is right and how to treat people in a non discriminatory way since many say we are "the buckle of the Bible belt". You would have the backing of many LGBTQ who want to be able to freely live "the American dream" without fear. You would also receive support from millennials and the like, who are not LGBTQ, but are still actively involved in civil rights. I hope you take this matter seriously and look into adding sexual orientation and gender identity into our non discriminatory laws.
