The U.S. Senate has approved a bill to name the new
federal courthouse to be built in Greenville for the late
former Gov. Carroll Campbell.
Campbell, who served as
governor of South Carolina from 1987 to 1995, died in December
from a heart attack following a battle with Alzheimer's
disease. Campbell previously served in the U.S. House of
Representatives from 1978 to 1986.
U.S. Sen. Lindsey
Graham, R-S.C., praised Campbell as a trailblazer, "He was the
first governor to make an aggressive, successful effort to
recruit large numbers of international businesses to our
state."
U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., said Campbell
served as a mentor after DeMint was elected to Campbell's old
seat.
"Carroll was an optimist and a visionary," DeMint
said.
U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis, R-S.C., has introduced a
companion bill in the House to name the courthouse for
Campbell.
