MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A newborn boy left at Grand
Strand Regional Medical Center is the first child in Horry County
taken in under the state's Safe Haven for Abandoned Babies law.
The 3-pound, 2-ounce baby left at the hospital Saturday is in the
care of the Horry County Department of Social Services.
The three-year-old law lets parents leave unwanted newborns with
a worker at a hospital or an outpatient facility and without
criminal prosecution.
A woman brought the child to the hospital but didn't identify
herself or the child's parents, according Horry County DSS
officials. The woman only said the child's mother didn't want to
keep him.
The law applies to infants up to 30 days old.
Rick Shelley with the Horry County DSS said a hearing is set Nov.
20 in Family Court where any person wanting to assert parental
rights to the infant must attend.
Another baby boy was left at Summerville Medical Center in
Dorchester County during the weekend.
