Hollings plans to endorse Kerry

(Published January 22‚ 2004)

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings planned to endorse his colleague Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry on Thursday following Kerry's surprising win in Iowa earlier this week, sources close to the campaign said.

Since Monday's win in the Iowa caucuses, Kerry has started reaching out to activists and strategists in other important campaign states. South Carolina is hosting the first-in-the-South Democratic primary on Feb. 3.

"This isn't the only place there is a race," Kerry said Thursday from New Hampshire.

Hollings is South Carolina's senior senator and the state's highest ranking Democrat and his support is expected to provide a much-needed boost to Kerry's efforts in the state where he first officially declared his candidacy in September. Since then, the Massachusetts senator has been seen little in South Carolina and he has yet to put up any ads in the state.

Hollings' office confirmed that the senator would make an appearance at 4 p.m. but would not say what the announcement would be.
