BEACH SAFETY

Lifeguards shifted to MB State Park
Two locales to have coverage Wednesday through Sunday

State lifeguards will be moved to Myrtle Beach State Park today as a temporary replacement for the safety service lost earlier this year because of a terminated vendor contract.

Huntington Beach State Park will transfer some of its lifeguards to the busy Myrtle Beach park, meaning both will be able to provide monitoring at least Wednesday through Sunday until a permanent solution is found, according to the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism.

The Myrtle Beach park is one of the most dangerous beaches in the area because of the large number of visitors, according to Horry County Beach Patrol.

"We haven't hired any additional people at the moment," said Marion Edmonds, PRT spokesman. "We are going to move two or three of the lifeguards that are working at Huntington."

The state will continue to search for a permanent solution that will place lifeguards on the beach throughout the week. Officials are speaking with Horry County about helping.

The e-mail announcement was sent by the agency Friday.

Edmonds told The Sun News on Thursday that the agency was searching for a way to replace the guards but it did not know when a new vendor would be hired.

Edmonds said PRT Director Chad Prosser, a resident and former Horry County Council member, ordered the new arrangement.

Guards will be on duty 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Edmonds said.

The state park and the city of Myrtle Beach both lost lifeguard services when vendor contracts with Boardwalk Beach Services were terminated. The company's owner, Easa Sayadchi, became entangled in legal troubles, causing the groups to split.
