DNR cracking down on vandals at Bald Rock Heritage Preserve
State natural resources officials say that vandals who are caught spray painting on Bald Rock in northern Greenville County near Caesars Head may face a fine of up to $1,000 and untold community service hours cleaning up their mess.
Kenny League, a conservation officer with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, said spray painting on the large rock with the popular view is getting out of hand, as is littering, and will not be tolerated further.
"It looks like something in a carnival side show up there," League said. "This is defacing nature and the environment, and it needs to stop."
If vandals are caught spray painting the rock or littering on the heritage preserve, League said, they face fines between $265 and $1,000. Vandals may also be sentenced to complete community service by helping to clean up Bald Rock.
Bald Rock is a popular tourist attraction alongside US 276 near Caesars Head that provides scenic, panoramic views of the east side of Table Rock and the surrounding foothills of Pickens and Greenville counties. The preserve is a complex of granite outcrops that harbor several groups of rare plant species, all of which are sensitive to the effects of vandalism.
If concerned citizens see anyone vandalizing Bald Rock they may call the DNR hot line at 1-800-922-5431. You are not required to give your name, and you may be eligible for a reward.
