Norsworthy Named Top Grad Student

BLACKVILLE, SC---Jason Norsworthy, Clemson Extension service soybean specialist, has been named the outstanding graduate student for 2001 by the Weed Science Society of America.

Norsworthy has a join appointment with Agriculture and Forestry Research at Clemson.

Stationed at Edisto Research and Educatio center, he received his award February 14th at the WSSA awards banquet in Greensboro, NC. The award included a plaque and a check for $1,250.

"This is fantastic news!" said Margaret Owens, executive secretary for the SC Soybean Association. "We are so proud of Jason and pleased with the work that he is doing for South Carolina soybean farmers."

The native of Arkansas received his BS degree in agronomy from Louisiana Tech University, where he was named the outstanding agronomy student and outstanding plant science senior in 1995.

While a graduate student at the University of Arkansas he was named the outstanding MS agronomy student for research to develop a laboratory screening procedure for detection of propanil-resistant barnyardgrass by monitoring chlorophyl flourescence.

His doctoral research involved a quantitative description of week interference in soybean as affected by cultural practices and glyphosate timing.

For the work, the Southern Weed Science Society named Norsworthy the top Ph.D. graduate for 2000. The Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences at the University of Arkansas named him the outstanding Ph.D. student.

Norsworthy was also recognized by the College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at Arkansas as the 1999 Dale Bumpers Distinguished Graduate Scholar.
