You have handled the recent events with a level of grace that is admirable. I was present at the unfurling of the battle standard at the Confederate Memorial in 2000.I felt a strong sense of pride for my ancestors, and for South Carolina for doing what I believed to be the right thing. I have recently come to agree with you about the need to remove the battle standard.I am a descendent of a Confederate veteran, one of 6 members of my family who fought against what they felt was a tyrannical government, and I believe that to fight what you view as tyranny is the true nature of what it is to be American. I would like you to consider an alternate to the battle standard. I propose that the battle standard of the Army of Northern Virginia be moved to the Confederate Relics room and replaced with the South Carolina flag of Secession. This being a purely South Carolinian symbol of resistance to tyranny, and one which predates the Confederacy. This flag fortunately has not been soiled with the taint of racism that has caused so many issues for our state over the years, and it is my sincere belief that it would do a better job of representing the people of South Carolina. We in this country have the distinct privilege of being able to honor our dead as we see fit, and I feel that the Secession Flag would do an excellent job of representing what the veterans of south Carolina's past stood for. It is my hope that you will present this proposal to the House and Senate as an option. Thank you once again for your service to South Carolina. Sincerely, Patrick J. Tart Beaufort, SC
