President's visit to S.C. in doubt
President Bush's
planned visit to Columbia Thursday is in doubt because of the death Saturday of
Pope John Paul II.Bush is scheduled to address a joint assembly of the state
Legislature, pressing his case for Social Security reform.A White House
spokesman said Saturday that any changes to Bush's schedule would be announced
today or Monday. But sources that spoke on the condition of anonymity said state
Republicans were told in a conference call last week that the trip would most
likely be altered in the event of the pope's death. The sources said if the trip
is called off, it's uncertain if it would be rescheduled.
