I respectfully request consideration to maintain the 4% ratio for Active Duty military homeowners in Beaufort County. I failed to submit my paperwork by 15 May 2015 and have no excuse other than the fact that this is a new requirement for me and I was working for the Commander of USCENTCOM from May 2014 - June 2015 - as you know we are fighting wars on several fronts in the Middle East. I travelled frequently into the Middle East and worked nearly non-stop during that period. Since June, I left Florida and moved my family to NYC in order to assume command of a Communications Battalion in Brooklyn, NY. It goes without saying that I have had a busy year. That said, I ask for leniency on this requirement and submit the enclosed paperwork for your consideration. I am fully prepared to pay a reasonable late fee, but to have to pay an extra $300 per month in property taxes seems a bit harsh for an Active Duty military family who simply did not submit the paperwork on time. 2. At this time, my home in SC is not rented. It has been vacant since June; therefore, adding this additional payment to my monthly mortgage has significant implications. My financial burden is not your problem, but I ask you take this into consideration due to the fact that if I revert back to the higher ratio my property tax goes up significantly. 3. Please know that my status as an Active Duty Marine has not changed, I have been on Active Duty since 1998. I respectfully ask that you please consider my situation and know that I will submit all of my future paperwork before the 15th of May each year I remain on Active Duty. Please allow my family to maintain the 4% ratio on my home in SC. 4. I made an appeal to the County Assessor - Mr. Ed Hughes and he told me that he does not have the authority to make common sense decisions when it comes to dealing with late submissions. I ask that you grant him the authority to apply common sense to my situation. Very respectfully, LtCol Shea U.S. Marines
