By EMILY BERRY The Anderson Independent-Mail will hand out its
annual Pointing the Way awards today at the Civic Center of Anderson.
The invitation-only lunch is expected to fill the civic center’s
banquet hall to capacity with nearly 400 people. This year’s ceremony will
mark the sixth class of Pointing the Way winners.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford will be the keynote speaker.
The first Pointing the Way awards were presented as part of the
Independent-Mail’s 100th anniversary celebration. Winners are presented
with an engraved lighthouse statuette.
Last year’s winners were James Robert "Radio" Kennedy; Mr. Kennedy’s
friend and former T.L. Hanna High School football coach Harold Jones; Mr.
Kennedy’s brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Pat Kennedy; Clemson
President Jim Barker; public health advocate Becky Campbell; and Russell
Harris, president of Partners for a Healthy Community.
Other past winners are the AnMed Health System, Joey Preston, Beatrice
Thompson and Lucille Mayo in 1999; Lila Albergotti, Kathryn and Leo Smith,
Carl Stone and Roy Jeffcoat in 2000; Cordes Seabrook, Nancy Boyle, Dr.
Mack Burriss and Billy Wilkes in 2001 and Don Garrison, John Garman,
Marion Tarrant and Julie and Harry Morse in 2002.
Because of the full attendance expected, guests are asked to arrive
early in order to check in a the entrance.
