THE COMPLETE SITUATION THIS MORNING BETWEEN LEROY LUCKETT 2/27, 2015 MR. LUCKETT GOT A PASS TO THE MAIL ROOM THIS MORNING. HE DIDN'T IMMEDIATELY LEAVE. HE STARTED FINISHING THE LAST OF HIS LEGAL WORK. OFFICER JAMES, THE WING OFFICER, SAW MR. LUCKETT AND QUESTIONED WHY HE STILL HERE. THEN DEMANDED THE PASS BACK. MR LUCKETT STATED HE STILL HAS 30 MINITES TO MAILROOM CLOSES.THE OFFICER JAMES SAYS ITS OVER WITH. MR.LUCKETT'S REQUESTED THE SGT.JOHNSONS BE PRESENCE. THE OFFICER REFUSED. MR LUCKETT KICKED THE DOOR TO GET COUNSELOR MOORE ATTENTION. BUT MOORE DIDN'T WANT TO HERE THE COMPLAINT. HE STRAIT TOLD THE OFFICER TO LOCK LUCKETT DOWN. AFTERWARDS MR. LUCKETT HAS JUST BEEN TRYING TO HAVE HIS LEGAL MAIL POST DATED FOR TODAY TO HELP MEET HIS MARCH 2 DEADLINE. ALSO MR. LUCKETT JUST WANT TO BE TOOKEN OUT THE UNIT TO AVOID FURTHER CONFLICT.
Morning Feb 27, 2015 (information I received from an inmate) I, Katherine Hurst, called Dr. Moore's office after finding out about Mr. Luckett being denied to go to the mail room to send his LEGAL mail. I made another call to Dr. Moore's office each time requesting a counselor for Mr. Luckett per Mr. Luckett's request. I spoke to Anastasia each time. Evening Feb, 27, 2015. Anastasia said I should call Mr. Moore, which I did and had to leave a voice mail. I than called the other number Anastasia gave me requesting a counselor see Mr. Luckett per his request. I understand a counselor finally went to talked to Mr. Luckett after my ALL DAY efforts asking for help.
The last phone call I received about Mr. Luckett was almost a goodbye letter written to me from Mr. Luckett. It was read to me by the inmate that had been calling me with updates. Officer James' actions toward Mr. Luckett started this problem!! Hasn't this officer been trained how to correctly handle inmates in this unit? I'm not saying Mr. Luckett was correct in his actions, but was provoked by Office James. Why didn't Mr. Moore have Mr. Luckett locked down and not being allowed to mail his LEGAL mail on time? And this man is a counselor!!? Mr. Luckett's life is in your hands and I am holding YOU ALL responsible!!!
I know Warden you listen and return your calls. But I believe you don't like OUTSIDERS interfering with your prison business. I am sorry the people at Kirkland have not been properly trained to handle mental health inmates PROPERLY. If they are, why is Office James provoking such inmates as Mr. Luckett? Who is keeping these officers ACCOUNTABLE?
I have, again, as I have stated before to people at Kirkland, that Mr. Luckett is suicidal. This type of behavior from the officer in questions has, again, pushed Mr. Luckett over the edge. Why are inmates pushed to the edge of suicide. Inmates like Mr. Luckett are not getting the proper help at Kirkland and other prisons in South Carolina. I hear this from SC inmates over and over again.
I'm doing all I can do to help inmates in prison in South Carolina. Mr. Luckett isn't the only inmate I've helped. You can come up with all the answers about Mr. Luckett you want, but this doesn't change how far this man has been pushed by officers. It has got to stop!!!
