Dede,

I have spoken with Ms. Hiles via telephone.   The company she works for is a wire service or a business that orders permits for multiple companies nationwide.  She stated they were a small company and other states would bypass their company when  they requests  permits.  I assured her we do not do this.  I also explained to her that the permit office is staffed with 6 employees and are required to  work a 30  minute lunch, afterhours and on weekends when we get behind on permits.   In the last couple months, it is taking up to 24 hours for a permit to be issued. 

 

In the last several years, I have seen an increase in the weight, width and height of the commodities being transported  within and throughout our state.  We too want to ensure industry receives their permits in a timely manner but at the same time, we will not  compromise the safety of the motoring public or our states infrastructure by issuing permits with routes that would strike overhead structures or route over structurally deficient  bridges.
